I live in Haliburton County. It’s a beautiful little place filled with warm and friendly people always willing to lend a hand and show support for one another. But, like in every other town, there are a few asshats. A few days ago, one of our local asshats vandalized a business by spray painting the word ‘fag’ across their front door. Sadly, it’s actually the second time this has happened (in just a few short months) to this same business owner.
This is what the business owner wrote on his page yesterday.
In his post, Christoper wrote “ My question to you is: How do we stop this sort of hatred spreading in our community? How do we make sure this never happens again?”
We know that children aren’t born intolerant and filled with hate. It’s taught. So my answer would be, to stop it before it starts. To talk to our kids about acceptance and tolerance, kindness and compassion. To raise children who don’t turn out to be the town asshat. And even better, to raise kids who would stand up to the town asshat!
Anyways, I wanted to do something nice for Christopher and since nobody ever seems to want to eat what I bake 😜, I thought I’d stick to what I’m good at and make something artsy with the kids.
We made rainbow handprints cards. The rainbow of course represents pride in the LGBQT community and our handprints are so very personal. We wrote a little message of support on the back and plan to drop them off to Chris tomorrow. I know it’s not much but I hope when he sees the tiny little rainbow handprints of our 2 and 1 year old, he’ll know that they are a few of the many children in our community who are being raised to love.
If you have a local group or business that would like to make rainbow handprints for Chris, send me a message. I’ll come with my paints and paper and help! Shower him with colourful handprints to show our support.
Or make one with your kids and put it in the mail! Here’s how we made ours. ❤️
Look at this!

Awesome idea! It disappoints me to think that people can still be so ignorant but it makes me more proud to know that many more people are showing love and compassion.

It’s shocking isn’t it? But yes, good to know that this kind of ignorance is not the ‘norm’ and that so many are speaking up.

Great blog! Could not agree more… “We know that children aren’t born intolerant and filled with hate. It’s taught. So my answer would be, to stop it before it starts. This is a brilliant idea!! Maybe this idea could become something bigger?? Perhaps we could make them by the ten fold (like come up with a specific design/slogan to accompany them & have them printed – I’m a graphic designer) and businesses & homes could display them as a sign of acceptance/support?? Just a thought…

I love that idea. Let’s do it. ❤️
Now – would we be allowed to use the term ‘asshat’ or no…?

If you wanna go all out with the campaign, maybe Handprints Against Hate? (I still like Asshat but this is more appropriate for all ages). After all, this is a hate crime.
